Liverpool and Newcastle United will lock horns at Anfield on New Year’s Day for the first Premier League game of 2024.
The Reds ended 2023 the league winners, and after Arsenal stumbling away at Fulham, Liverpool could extend their lead at the summit of the table.
Unbeaten in their last four games, Liverpool will be looking to extend their invincible streak against the Magpies with a win the most desirable result.
The Magpies’ form has taken a major nosedive over the past few weeks, with Eddie Howe’s side losing to both Luton and Nottingham Forest either side of Christmas.
Following their 2-0 win at Burnley , the Reds took the lead at the top of the Premier League, and they remained there after Arsenal’s stunning 2-0 loss at home to West Ham a few days later.
Team News – Liverpool vs Newcastle
Alexis Mac Allister could return for Liverpool on New Year’s Day following a six-match absence because of a badly cut knee.
The Reds remain without Andy Robertson, Kostas Tsimikas, Joel Matip, Ben Doak, Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic.
Newcastle are likely to have nine players unavailable, though the injury to Jamaal Lascelles is not serious.
Joelinton made his comeback from a hamstring issue as a substitute on Boxing Day.
Head–to–headLiverpool are unbeaten in all 14 league games against Newcastle since a 2-0 defeat at St James’ Park in December 2015, two months into Jurgen Klopp’s reign.
Newcastle are winless in 27 away matches versus Liverpool in all competitions (D5, L22). They last won at Anfield in the League Cup fourth round in November 1995, while their only Premier League victory there came in April 1994.
All three previous New Year’s Day league meetings between these clubs were top-flight home matches for Newcastle, who won two and drew the other.
