Brazilian sensation Vitor Roque is set to make his debut for Barcelona when the Spanish champions travel to the Canary Islands to face Las Palmas.
The 18-year-old has signed a long-term deal tying him to the Blaugrana until 2031 and will wear the number 19 shirt previously worn by the likes of Ferran Torres, Sergio Agüero, Patrick Kluivert and even Lionel Messi.
On Wednesday, Barcelona successfully registered the forward who had been training with his new teammates since they returned from the winter break.
Despite his young age, Roque has already played a great deal of football for Athletico Paranaense and the Brazilian U-20 national team, catching Barça’s eye.
With 21 goals in 45 games this season, he has already won the Paraná state championship and has quickly become one of Brazil’s leading goalscorers.
In addition, he won the South American Under-20 title last February, leading the tournament goalscoring charts with six goals.
Las Palmas vs Barcelona
After a faltering end to 2023, Barcelona will try to start 2024 with a win when they play mid-table Las Palmas in on Thursday night at Estadio Gran Canaria.
There has been nearly constant discussion of Xavi Hernandez being under pressure, and that speculation will only intensify if they fall further out of La Liga’s top two.
After 18 games, the holders are seven points behind the pacesetters this season, Real Madrid and Girona, making a championship defense increasingly impossible.
To round out the year, they just barely beat bottom-of-the-table Almeria.
And they begin 2024 with a challenging away trip to Estadio Gran Canaria, where Atletico Madrid fell earlier in the season.
Although Las Palmas finished 2023 with a loss to Athletic Club, Garcia Pimienta’s club has performed above expectations in La Liga this season, collecting up 25 points from 18 games to lie in tenth place in the rankings.
They are only seven points away from a European place and up to 12 points above the relegation zone. The last time these two teams faced was in March 2018, when Las Palmas held Barcelona to a 1-1 draw.
