Anuoluwapo Opeyori
Men’s singles champion Anuoluwapo Opeyori (Lagos) defeated Victor Ikechukwu (Rivers) 2-1 (21-12, 16-21, 21-10) in the final to win the third Ikoyi Club National Men and Women Badminton Classics on Saturday in Lagos.
The country’s top 36 players were invited for the championship based on their national rankings.
The women’s singles title was won by former African champion, Dorcas Adesokan, who defeated Sofiat Obanisola (Rivers) 2-0 (23-21, 21-18) in the final.
Habeeb Bello (Oyo) and Aliyu Shehu (Niger) emerged as men’s joint third-place winners, while Deborah Ukeh and dethroned women’s champion, Ruth Ebere, both from Edo State, were the women’s singles joint third-place winners.
Winners in both men and women categories got N500,000 each, second positions received N300,000 while each of the joint third-place winners went home with N150,000 each.
Semifinalists got #100,000 each, while all the players that participated and did not win were paid N50,000 each.
Meanwhile, history was made at the end of the championship as Oba Adedapo Tejuoso was inducted into the Nigerian Badminton Hall of Fame, thus emerging as the first Nigerian to be honoured.
